More About Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a country known for its peaceful life and tranquillity. Costa Ricans are friendly and hospitable, obvious product of their freedom. Costa Rica is one of the oldest democracies in America. It is a free and independent republic. Their inhabitants not only enjoy complete political stability, but they are also committed to their free, independent nation. Peace is their most cherished possession, the reason why they suppressed the army during the last century.

Population and Language
There are approximately 3.6 million inhabitants whose maternal language is Spanish. Costa Rica has 7 provinces: San José, Alajuela, Heredia, Puntarenas, Cartago, Guanacaste and Limón. Its capital, San José, is the largest province with the most population.

Location
Costa Rica is located in Central America, and therefore has ports in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans which are easily accessed by 153 miles of highway which connects them. Strategically placed in the center of Central America, our country occupies a privileged place in the world. The Caribbean Sea borders the East and the Pacific Ocean the West. By land, the North limits with Nicaragua and the South with Panama.

Climate
A small tropical country, Costa Rica is located between the two oceans. This, combined with its complex mountainous topography, gives rise to an extensive variety of habitat. Therefore, its topography offers a variety of climatic conditions . In general, the temperatures vary between 14 and 22 degrees centigrade in the altitude of the Central Valley and between 22 and 28 degree Celsius close to the sea. The temperature is relatively stable throughout the year, although there are slight changes according to the seasons: "Summer" (the dry season) or "Winter" (the rainy season). The summer prevails generally between December and April and the winter between May and November. These seasons are defined clearly in the Pacific part of the country, but they are much less sensible in the Caribbean where the precipitation distributes uniformly throughout the year.

Protected grounds
Opened to two oceans and to two subcontinents, the small territory of Costa Rica contains a rich biodiversity which is strictly protected.. The national parks and protected grounds of Talamanca-La Amistad, shared with Panama, and the biospheric reserves of the Central Volcanic mountain range, which includes among others the National Parks of Arenal, Braulio Carrillo.
